Even though I hadn’t heard it in decades, a few years ago I had to search YouTube, just to hear the Vestron video bump. And it was just as magical as I’d remembered.
So I won’t bury the lead. The Vestron name has been brought back by LionsGate home Entertainment. They’re releasing what they’re calling the Vestron Video Collector’s Series.
They even made a cool trailer for one of the videos from the collection, Return of the Living Dead 3. Other releases include Chopping Mall, Blood Diner, Waxwork one and two and Chud 2.
The company was launch in 1981 by Alan Furst who bough Time-Life Film’s movie library. His daughter actually came up with the Vestron name. Combining the name of Roman goddess Vesta and "Tron", which means "instrument" in Greek.
So what were some VHS tapes you remember with the Vestron name? You remember Trancers, Deathstalker, Re-Animator and Evil Dead 2.
Vestron was on a roll, getting the VHS release rights to movies like Monster Squad and An American Werewolf in London. But then the studios got smart and and jacked up their prices, beyond what Vestron could afford. And Vestron actually started making their own movies. Like Dirty Dancing and Earth Girls are easy. Nobody puts baby in the corner!
But with a bunch more movies in the works, and people not wanting to watch B-movies as much Vestron’s finances started to go south. They filed for bankruptcy and got bought by Live Entertainment in 1991.
But hey, Vestron’s back now, Rob. So happy days are here again.
